Sustainable Value Creation

KLP has taken the initiative in this collaborative venture by Norway's largest institutional investors. The aim is to influence Norwegian companies towards sustainable development and long-term value creation.

In 2008 a group of Norway's largest investors sent out a survey to all of the 76 companies forming the Oslo Stock Exchange Benchmark Index. The companies were to report against guidelines that are important for responsible and sustainable business operation, for example human rights, employee rights, the environment and corruption. They were also asked about whom the guidelines applied to and how they were imbedded and implemented. In addition the survey deals with reporting and monitoring procedures in these areas and on the responsibilities of the board of directors.

«Unique and exciting»
Kristin Halvorsen, the Norwegian Minister of Finance, participated in the launch of Sustainable Value Creation in August. "Never before has such a broadly based investor group worked together to collect and compare the performance of companies in these areas. This makes this project unique and very exciting," said Kristin Halvorsen.

The aim of the survey is to obtain a broad set of data that are comparable, not just between companies, but from year to year. In addition to collecting data as a basis for investment, the aim is to help to increase awareness of the questions in the survey.

Collaborative partners
KLP is the initiative-taker for the project. The other investors behind the project are Alfred Berg, DnB NOR, Folketrygdfondet, Nordea, the Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry, Odin, StatoilHydro Kapitalforvaltning, Storebrand and Vital. Together the investors represent total assets of NOK 2700 billion, of which NOK 1000 billion is directly invested in the Norwegian market.

Sustainable Value Creation is continuing in 2009.  The investors are also hoping for an international expansion.
